    Overview
The CP-550 is a high-speed 8051 card featuring an optional LCD display and keypad. It uses the recently introduced 87C550 MPU, with 8K bytes of on-chip EPROM, and an 8-channel, 10-bit A/D converter. As a member of the high-speed microcontroller family, its performance is up to 8 times faster than a standard 8051 running at 12 MHz. The LCD display option supports two configurations: 2 lines of 20 characters or 4 lines of 20 characters. The keypad option includes a 4 by 5 keypad and keypad controller chip.

87C550 Microcontroller
The microcontroller used on the CP-550 is the 87C550, which is an enhanced 8051 family derivative. Its architecture is similar to an 80C52 but offers the following improvements: 8-channel, 10-bit A/D converter, 8K bytes of on-chip EPROM, 1K bytes of on-chip SRAM, PWM outputs, up to 55 digital I/O lines, optimized instruction execution, up to 33 MHz clock speed, two full-duplex serial ports, dual data pointers, power-fail reset, watchdog timer, 16 interrupt sources, and enhanced STOP and IDLE operation.

Board Features
The board measures 4.5 by 6.5 inches. Memory external to the 87C550 resides in two 28 pin memory sockets. The first supports 32K bytes of SRAM, while the second supports 28K bytes of EEPROM, EPROM, or battery-backed SRAM. Other board features include RS-232 buffering on serial port 0, optional RS-232 or RS-485 buffering on serial port 1, and optional DS1286 calendar/clock chip. All resource lines of the 87C550 are brought out on a 50 pin header connector. A separate header connector can be used to access the A/D lines of the 87C550.

System Monitor Software
The CP-550 comes with the MD-550 system monitor debugger software installed in the 87C550's EPROM. During development, this debugger allows user code to be downloaded into battery-backed RAM and then tested. Once tested, user software can be burned into the available board EPROM ( 8K on the 87C550 and 28K in the second memory socket ).

87C550 EPROM Programming
For 87C550 EPROM programming, try Allen Systems' PB-51/11 Programmer. A special adapter accommodates the 87C550. An economy version of the adapter uses a conventional 68 Pin PLCC socket but is low in cost. The deluxe adapter uses a 68 Pin PLCC ZIF socket.
