Overview The LITTLE BYTE-51 is a miniature single board computer based upon the popular 8051 family of microcontrollers. The family devices which can be installed on the board are the 89C51 or 89C52 with 4K or 8K of Flash, respectively. The 89C5X parts are fully static MPU's with clock speeds of up to 20 MHz. Flash Memory A main advantage of the 89C5X is its on-chip Flash memory for program storage. Because the Flash is electrically erasable, it is possible to program new application software while the 89C51/52 remains installed on the board. This "in-system" programming is performed using Allen Systems' PB-51/11 Programming Board. Board Features An important feature of the LITTLE BYTE-51 is its small footprint. The board measures only 1.625 by 2.25 inches. Other board features include the DS1232 MicroMonitor chip, 93LC66 serial EEPROM, and a prototyping area. The DS1232 generates the reset signal on power-up, and provides an optional watchdog timer. The 93LC66 is a serial EEPROM with 512 bytes of storage. Connectors Board connectors make the LITTLE BYTE-51 easy to use. Two 20 pin headers provide access to all processor resource lines. They can be tied to user circuitry or to the PB-51/11 Programming Board during programming. A three pin header on the board provides communication with a PC's printer port. If desired, RS-232 buffering can be added to the 89C5X's UART in the prototyping area. This can be linked to the serial port on a host PC. Finally, an on-board regulator allows the LITTLE BYTE-51 to be used with an unregulated source of 9 VDC. Summary All in all, the LITTLE BYTE-51 is a board that is small in size yet big on performance. Its on-chip Flash memory is a powerful feature that simplifies installation and update of user code. |
